Welcome to the Green Mountain Dog Club, an AKC all-breed club dedicated to the advancement of purebred dogs, promoting responsible dog ownership, and encouraging participation in AKC dog sports and events for purebred and mixed-breed owners alike.
Along with our sister club, the Woodstock Dog Club, GMDC puts on the annual four-day Vermont Scenic Circuit dog shows at the historic Tunbridge World’s Fair grounds, which attract around 1,000 dogs from all over the country in mid-July. Held outdoors in a classic Vermont river valley surrounded by mountains, the Vermont Scenic Circuit is among the few “destination shows” left, in an era when many clubs in the area have moved to the Big E or similar venues. After showing their dogs, exhibitors can explore the surrounding countryside, drive past stone walls and through covered bridges, visit the grave of the Justin Morgan horse, or cool off in the river right at the show site. There’s wonderful food in the area, an ice cream social outside the rings on Thursday and Friday during Group judging, and on Saturday night, a barbecue with live music and dancing.
Another flagship event for the Green Mountain Dog Club is the (usually) twice-annual FastCAT Fun Run at Dac Rowe Field in Waterbury. The Fun Run is unofficial and untimed — a great way to introduce a dog to the sport, get some practice, or just have a fun day out with your dog. We even have a 50-yard “Puppy Run” for dogs age 6 months to one year (or any dog that needs a shorter course.) Entries are closed for the June Fun Run, so if you didn’t get to enter, watch this space for the announcement or our fall event.
The Green Mountain Dog Club is the oldest AKC all-breed club in Vermont. Its membership is drawn from dog owners, trainers, exhibitors and quality breeders in northeastern and central Vermont. Meetings take place in the greater Waterbury area.
Underlying all the Green Mountain Dog Club’s efforts is the goal of making life better for dogs everywhere. Through local action, education, and outreach, we support purebred dogs and dog sports, help for dogs in need, health research and legislation that benefits dogs, responsible breeding, and educated dog ownership. We are a proud member club of the American Kennel Club.
